To Kakadu National Park with a Full Day of Sightseeing Day 2

Depart Darwin at 8 am to begin this exciting and memorable adventure. Visit Fog Dam; a wildlife haven for birds and animals and superb photographs. Stop for morning tea at a typical Northern Territory Road House – ‘Bark Hut Inn’ which was the noted centre for Buffalo hunting in the early days. Our first off the sealed road experience is to follow the Old Jim Jim Road which was the pioneering tracks of the explorers, fishermen and hunters of the last century. Visit to Maguk Gorge (Barramundi Gorge) noted for its regular water flow. Enjoy a picnic lunch and short walks and maybe a swim. An afternoon wilderness cruise on the Yellow Waters Billabong. Here we cruise the beautiful wetlands where you’ll see crocodiles and bird life.

Kakadu National Park Day 3

Depart at 8 am for one of the major highlights of the three day journey, your Guluyambi Cultural Cruise. Your Indigenous Guide will point out the crocodiles resting, nesting and infesting this tidal waterway. Demonstration of spear throwing by the Indigenous Guide – the way to catch the barramundi. The experience of crossing the East Alligator River at low tide. (Todays schedule may vary in timing to suit the low tide). Our journey on dirt roads passing wetlands and rugged ranges to Oenpelli (Gunbalanya). Lunch on a rock ledge overlooking spectacular Arnhem Land/Oenpelli. Stop at the local store and the Art Gallery.   Join your Guide for a visit to a magnificent gallery of rock art in the nearby hills. A very sacred site.

Kakadu Exploration - Darwin Day 4

Travel to Ubirr, which is recognized as one of Kakadu’s best rock art sites.   Visit Mamukala Wetlands and Bird Hide and take shelter in the bird hide to watch bird life undisturbed across the waters of Mamukala. Time to visit the Ranger National Park Headquarters, the Bowali Visitor Centre or to stop for a moment to absorb and photograph this great wilderness – so significant to the Aboriginal people. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea included provides a variety of venues and perhaps the opportunity to boil the billy and sample some local bush tucker. Visit Windows on the Wetland – an interesting educational centre. Stop and browse through a didgeridoo factory and talk to the Indigenous owner. Our arrival back in Darwin will be at approximately 6.00 pm. Return to your Darwin accommodation.

All Aboard The Ghan Train To Katherine Day 5

Beginning in Darwin, this epic four day, three night Gold Class, 2979km tour will take you to some of the most remote yet captivating parts of Australia in style and luxury. Depart Darwin at 10 am. After lunch arrive in Katherine ready to experience your first included Off Train Excursion to the magnificent and spiritual Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge.

 

Experience Katherine Outback Experience which provides a unique window into the real Australian Outback and the inner workings of life on a cattle station through the sharing of stories and experiences, cattle dog demonstrations and live music performances. The ‘Stock Yards’ is where the action takes place. Enjoy a live demonstration of the art of horse-breaking, depicting the psychology between man and horse, watch the Riverboyne Dog Team working cattle, goats or ducks in harmony, before interacting with Bernie the Buffalo, Tin Shaker the Brahman Steer and Legend the Trick Horse. There is even time to sit back and relax, listening to live music including some well-known Aussie anthems and originals, often performed from a top of a horse. Back on board The Ghan enjoy your dinner as the sunsets over the outback in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant.

To Alice Springs Day 6

Wake up to a new view outside your window, in a world which feels a million miles from home. An outback sunrise could be one of the most spectacular you’ll ever see, setting the tone for the day ahead. After coffee, a juice and a sumptuous breakfast you’ll arrive in Alice Springs ready for another day of exploration.   Here you have the opportunity to embark on one of the included Off Train Excursions, taking in the delights of this famous outback town. A full day in Alice Springs gives you ample opportunity to visit the town landmarks, get up close and personal with Australia’s incredible flora and fauna or explore the Alice at your own leisure.

To Coober Pedy Day 7

After breakfast this morning you’ll wake up and rub your eyes with disbelief as we pull into the middle-of-nowhere stop at Manguri. Here, a friendly tour guide awaits ready to whisk you away for the day. Your destination – the sun-scorched opal mining capital of world, Coober Pedy, where more than half of the residents live underground. Venture into the tunnels and caves of this underground town, where you may even catch opal fever as you mine for riches, visit the otherworldly underground Serbian Orthodox church and take a glimpse of Umoona Opal Mine. Below the earth’s surface, you’ll enjoy a gourmet lunch in the most unique of locations before setting off to the stunning outback moonscape that is the Breakaways.

Your Last Day Onboard The Ghan Destination Adelaide Day 8

Looking out of your window this morning you’ll notice a dramatic change in landscape as the rich ochre tones of the outback make way for the beautiful green fields and pastoral lands of South Australia.   After breakfast you’ll have time to reflect on your journey before The Ghan rolls into Adelaide. Overnight Adelaide.

Sightseeing including a visit to Barossa Valley Day 9

Time to relax and unwind then a visit to the Barossa Valley for lunch and wine tasting. Dinner not included a chance to sample the local cuisine in down town Adelaide. Prepare for your 3 day escape to Kangaroo Island.

Fleurieu Peninsula – Kangaroo Island Day 10

Meet your Tour Guide for a 7am start and travel in your comfortable 4WD vehicle to Fleurieu Peninsula. Noted for its food, wine and wildlife. Visit Onkaparinga Gorge NP and enjoy morning tea. Onto d’Arenberg at McLaren Vale for wine tasting. Join your 3pm Sealink Ferry and disembark at Penneshaw to start your scenic Kangaroo Island adventure.  Afternoon tea at Sunset Winery takes in superb elevated sea views overlooking picturesque Eastern Cove and beyond, with the opportunity to taste some award winning Kangaroo Island wines.

A short drive onto Prospect Hill is a stairway of panorama with 360 degree views of Pelican Lagoon and the Southern Ocean.  Pennington Bay’s on the island’s south coast offers stunning bay views, where Dolphins and whales can often be spotted swimming and playing. Its also a great place to take in a walk along this sandy spectacular coastline, should time permit.

Kangaroo Island Exploration Day 11

A special treat before breakfast awaits you, as pelicans fly in for their breakfast feed. Set off for Stokes Bay on Kangaroo Island’s serene north coast, where the secluded white sandy beach features an intriguing tunnel, which hides a secret beach and a giant rock pool. Enjoy a bushwalk through Lathami Conservation Park, a protected habitat for the endangered glossy black cockatoo. These gorgeous birds soar above impressive gorges joined by two bodies of water named Gum Creek and Deep Gully. Travel on to Emu Bay, where 3 kms of white sand and sheltered waters are a great local attraction and popular swimming beach, before having lunch at the Frogs & Roses Nursery for true Island hospitality.  Travel to Penneshaw for afternoon tea and watch the ferry roll in for your return trip to the South Australian mainland. A pleasant journey back to Adelaide arriving 7.00 pm concludes your Kangaroo Island sojourn.
