Sydney – Killcare, Hunter Valley via the Hawkesbury River Valley Day 1

Your day will start at approximately 7:00 am when you will be met at your Sydney accommodation by your private guide.

History

This morning, travel out of Sydney via the historic towns of Richmond and Windsor. The atmosphere of these historic towns, together with the quaint rural settlements of Kurrajong, Bilpin, Lower Portland, Ebenezer, Pitt Town, Colo and Wiseman’s Ferry, contributes to the uniqueness of this truly picturesque area. Since 1794, when the first settlers arrived to farm their 30 acre plots, the area has been supplying fresh produce to Sydney. This continues today with many of the descendants from the first settlers still working and living in the district.

Farming

Travel into the fertile Hawkesbury River Valley known as the Food Basket of Sydney as it offers plenty of fresh produce from local farmers through the Hawkesbury Farm Gate Trail.

River Boat Postman

In the quaint town of Brooklyn you will join the Riverboat Postman on its historic cruise as it delivers the mail to isolated residents along the Hawkesbury River. The first Riverboat Postman started the run in 1910, and the tradition continues today. The skippers are locals who have lived in the area their whole lives – be entertained by the stories of the river whilst cruising up this spectacular waterway. Clients will enjoy coffee or hot tea, and delicious homemade Anzac biscuits for morning tea, as well as a very Aussie Ploughman’s style plate lunch on board. All boats are fully licensed, so clients can enjoy a glass of wine or beer, or a soft drink, with their lunch.

Sydney Rock Oyster Tasting

Following your cruise, stop at a local oyster producer for a fresh and delicious tasting, before travelling onto Killcare – let your guide show you around the area and discover the beauty of this area via hidden roads, before arriving at your beautiful accommodation for the night, Bells at Killcare. Relax and enjoy a pre dinner drink and a lovely three course meal.

Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner

Kilcare – Hunter Valley Wineries Day 2

Your day will start at approximately 8.00 am when you will be met by your private guide.

Learn about the Convict Time

Travel to the Hunter Valley through Wollombi via the Old Convict Road. The Convict Trail is the name for convict-built Great North Road as well as the surrounding land and historic buildings. This 240 kilometres long road was built by convict labour often working in irons which was constructed between 1826 and 1836 to provide an overland route from Sydney to Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.

It was – and remains – an extraordinary feat of engineering as it traverses sandstone gorges, razorback ridges and towering passes. Much of the original convict-built road remains in use today, although a lot of the original surface is well buried under bitumen. Convict-built remains such as stone retaining walls, pick-dressed cuttings, culverts, bridges and stone-cut drains can be seen when driving along the road or when walking in Dharug and Yengo National Parks.

Wollombi Pub

Along the Convict Trail, you will stop at the famous Wollombi Tavern, known for its infamous Dr Jurd’s Jungle Juice – learn about Dr. Jurd and his unique mixture and its history, while enjoying morning tea on the back verandah of the pub, overlooking idyllic country paddocks. The Wollombi Tavern as it is today, sits on the site of an earlier public house, originally built around the time of early European settlement during the 1840s – known then as the Wollombi Wine Saloon.

Hunter Valley

Arriving in the Hunter Valley, lunch today will be at Twine, which is the ultimate for those who enjoy modern Australian food with a twist. While overlooking the lazy Oakey Creek Valley with its rolling hills lined with vines, Twine is the perfect destination for lunch. Following lunch, enjoy a private wine tasting next door at Wynwood Estate Wines. This afternoon is focused on the boutique wineries, where the passion of the winemakers is obvious, and those who live, breathe and work wine lead us through the wine list. You will then visit two selected wineries and taste their creations. The day will finish at approx. 6.00 pm when you will be taken to your accommodation at Peppers Convent.

Newcastle – Central Coast Ocean Beaches – Lakes and Beautiful Scenery Day 3

Flexibility throughout your itinerary means that we can tailor your days to suit the preferences of your small group of travellers. This morning, tailoring another stop at one of our favourite boutique producers for another private wine or beer tasting, or trying some of the great local produce – from cheese to olives, oils, chocolates and honeys – before heading to Newcastle; a rapidly changing and maturing city.

The return journey to Sydney will travel through the picturesque and idyllic Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park on the northern outskirts of Sydney, stopping at Akuna Bay for a delicious lunch at a great local restaurant. Akuna Bay (named after the Aboriginal reference for ‘flowing water’) sits on the Cowan and Hawkesbury River System, north of Sydney Harbour. From here it’s an easy drive along beautiful, wooded small roads to discover the national park and the spectacular views at West Head. Aboriginal carvings in the rocks tell the story of how the land was used by the original inhabitants, and there is an opportunity for a walk to take in the history, flora, fauna and the incredible views. The Northern Beaches have a relaxed beachside ambience, offering Sydney-siders plenty of things to see and do. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and Pittwater on the other, the peninsula covers about 18 kilometres of open coastline and has excellent dining, surf beaches, waterways and parklands. You can stroll the Corso and enjoy the views on one of Sydney’s famous beaches, before our return to our Sydney accommodation.
