The Biggest Floods Since European Settlement – 4WD Travel from Adelaide – Follow The Old Ghan Railway – Short Drives Along the Birdsville & Oodnadatta Tracks – 4WD Rugged Travel To Lake Eyre Shores – A Flight Over Lake Eyre – A True Adventure!

Fly From Melbourne/Sydney To Adelaide & Travel North Direct To Marree Day 1

Fly to Adelaide to arrive at 7.00 am for a 7.30 am departure from Adelaide Airport or departure from Adelaide City at 8.00 am. Your journey today will take you direct to Marree, first along the Northern Hwy then cross the Flinders Ranges to Hawker, pass through lots of small settlements, now mainly ruins – clear evidence of the boom days of the 1880s. Follow The Old Ghan Railway, see hot springs and maybe enjoy a paddle. Pass through interesting and changing scenery – arrival in Marree in the early evening. Settle in to the quaint and refurnished original hotel from the days when Marree was the centre of transport – camels and trains – travelling north to The Alice or north east to Queensland along the Birdsville Track. Let’s drive a kilometre or two on the Birdsville Track just to say you have done that.

Rain earlier this year has transformed the countryside all ready. The floods have reached a 2 metre depth and there’s lots of water filling the creeks on the western, northern and eastern sides of the lake. The evaporation level is high due to the very dry atmosphere but in spite of this the experts are predicting this will be the ’daddy of all floods!’

Meals:
Morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner

Discovering The Secrets of Lake Eyre Day 2

What a way to start the day – a dawn flight over Lake Eyre which will amaze you. The pilot will choose the final route but could include Warburton Creek, Goyders Lagoon, the larger watercourses of the Diamantina and the Cooper. After your flight journey towards William Creek, a small town on the Oodnadatta Track, just a pub and a house or two, population 5.

Tough 4 wheel driving but worth it will take you to the shores of Lake Eyre this afternoon. A trackside spot under a shady tree will be ideal for your picnic lunch then you will see first hand the water in Lake Eyre. Maybe you will need to walk out on the salt pan to reach the shores – this will depend on the date of your visit – if the water is filling the lake or evaporating. Hopefully you will see flocks of pelicans nesting, abundant bird life and native animals. An amazing experience!

Local weather conditions and access to the lake may be restricted other sightseeing and 4 wheel driving will be substituted. Return to Marree for dinner and a great night together.

Brief Visit and Stops at the Flinders Ranges, Hawker and Burra Day 3

Depart Marree at 7.00 am for your journey on a different route into the Flinders Ranges for a drive through this beautiful, outback oasis which may tempt you to return to explore this region. Pass through the rural towns of Hawker, Peterborough and Burra, they all played very important parts in the early settlement days of outback South Australia.

Continue to Adelaide passing through the Barossa Valley – your arrival in Adelaide will be in the evening. For Melbourne or Sydney clients we suggest a flight departing from Adelaide after 8.30 pm.
