Introduction:

This tour offers 3 days of different experiences within 2 hours of Hobart.  Your guide will be a Tasmanian ecologist with a wealth of knowledge of the state’s unique environment and natural history.   You may catch a glimpse of a bandicoot flushed from its nest, the drumming of wallaby feet on the earth sending a secret message to another, the mimicry of an orchid that looks like an ant, Tasmania Devil Dens. Be flexible as each tour will be different just like the seasons of the year. These tours ensure that you are not just an observer – you will be immersed in landscapes, places and stories, a truly memorable experience.

This special Austour itinerary will provide a personalised small group discovery of Mt Wellington, the Tasman Peninsula and Mt Field National Park. These locations have been chosen to showcase the amazing diversity of Tasmania’s flora, fauna, landscapes and history.

In Darwin’s Footsteps Day 1

Follow the footsteps of this great scientist through the foothills to the summit of Mount Wellington. Today’s journey will follow the footsteps of Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary theory. In February 1836 Darwin sailed into Hobart on the HMAS Beagle and spent 12 days exploring the mountains, hills and coastline around Hobart. He made detailed observations about the huge variety of plants, animals and geological features he encountered.

From Mt Wellington journey through tall forest to beautiful alpine heaths to search for snow skinks, wingless grasshoppers, wedge-tailed eagles and beetles that Darwin discovered. Your descent from Mt Wellington follows the Hobart Rivulet from its source on the mountain to the historic Cascade Brewery. Enjoy lunch in the brewery gardens.

Abel Tasman - Dutch Coastal Explorer Day 2

Today you will visit the bays and beaches that Tasman explored and plenty more. Abel Janszoon Tasman in 1964, just 150 years after Columbus sailed the ocean blue, was diving into the surf to plant the Dutch flag on Forestier Peninsula. You will see the famous “three capes” of the Tasman Peninsula. Here on the tallest sea cliffs in Australia you may see some the rarest flowers in Tasmania. Amongst the majestic blue gums keep an eye out for endangered swift parrots. Out to sea we may see wheeling sea eagles, shy albatross and Australasian gannets hunting for fish. These seas are home to giant tuna, seals, dolphins, whales and great sharks. We will explain why so much of what you see is endangered.

The Tasman Peninsula is 60 minutes south of Hobart and is simply spectacular. Its personality is ever changing – one day it is serene, the vistas beguiling, whilst the next day it is savage, buffeted by wild seas and howling gales. We will walk on a surf beach and poke around little penguin burrows. Sitting on a rock we will enjoy a picnic lunch of fresh local produce with a glass of wine or if you prefer we will drop into a local eatery.

Forest Battle Day 3

Today will be a journey of discovery! Gaze up in awe at huge trees, discover plants that have changed little in millions of years and whose closest relatives are in Chile and New Zealand.

Clamber over mossy logs, smell the forest floor push your hands into the soft earth. Previously home to large numbers of Tasmanian Tigers, today these forests support Tasmanian Devils, Quolls and Eagles.
