Yes, however, as a licensed tour operator Austour encourages you to think about the choice of climbing or exploring, after all Uluru is a sacred site. Climbing is strenuous and dangerous and there is so much more to see and learn by walking around. Uluru Climb will be closed by the Rangers if it is too hot (above 35 degrees); too wet; too windy or too cold or for special cultural reasons so all tour operators can never guarantee that you will be able to climb.

7/ Is the guided Kings Canyon rim worth doing?


Yes, the 3.5 hour walk requires medium fitness. The scenery is spectacular – be careful – listen to your guide's instructions, carry water, use sunscreen, wear a shady hat and suitable walking shoes. The guided rim walk will be one of the highlights of your Central Australia holiday in Outback Australia.

2/ Is a Soft Adventure Tour with Austour different from a Camping Tour or Overland Safari Tour?

No, a Soft Adventure Tour is the same as a camping tour or safari tour or overland adventure tour. All passengers travel on the same vehicle; the camp cook/ catering manager caters for all the passengers; the itinerary is identical; all passengers participate the same – the only difference is the style of accommodation. Campers stay mostly in tents whilst Soft Adventure clients stay most nights in cabins (budget rooms) located in the caravan and camping parks. Soft Adventure passengers do spend 5 nights in tents on the Austour Great Australian Adventure of 29 nights duration.

On Austour Overland Adventure Tours the 28 to 58 age group are the clients that love the outdoors in the friendly atmosphere of the outback under the southern skies. No, tents are allocated on a twin share basis and you are responsible for pitching your own tent, keeping it clean and packing it up every day before you start your daily touring.

Most Overland Adventure crew wake the camp at 6.00 am; breakfast is served at 6.45 am and the coach starts rolling out of the camping park gate between 7.30 am and 8.00 am.

6/ Is travelling through the Australian Outback dangerous?

No the Outback is a vast area of Australia away from the population base. However, sometimes it can be very hot and travelling on your own could involve danger. On a group tour such as a Camping Safari Tour or Overland Adventure your crew are experienced and know what route to travel on and how to cope with the occasional emergency, rain, road closure etc. Safety and security make Overland Adventure Tours very popular for people of all ages and with like-minded people looking for fun and adventure!

7/ On an Overland Adventure Tour do I have a choice of menu and do you cater for special diets?

Our Catering Manager/Safari Cook provides Australian type meals. The itinerary lists the meals provided each day. (B = Breakfast: L = Lunch; D = Dinner). A cooked breakfast, cereal, toast, tea & coffee most mornings. Light breakfasts are also sometimes served. Lunches are salad type, smorgasbord style, fruit, cake, tea & coffee. The evening meal is 3 courses which maybe soup, main and dessert. Very wholesome. Austour is confident that you will return home having put on weight! Vegetarians can be catered for if pre-arranged in writing 14 days prior to departure date.

8/ If I only speak a little English will I cope on this type of tour?

Austour Overland Adventures encourage you to make your adventure an English language leaning experience. The driver/guide and catering manager are Australian and therefore only speak English. Australians and other English speaking travellers also join this tour. Your Tour Hostess (Language Assistant) is fluent in English, French and German. Everyone becomes a translator and a lot of learning and fun is experienced as everyone helps each other.

9/ Do I bring my own sleeping bag?

On a camping safari it is best that you bring your own sleeping bag, small pillow, liner. Austour provides you with a tent and foam mattress. You may, however, purchase a sleeping bag from Austour – this must be in writing 14 days prior to departure.

For those choosing the Soft Adventure Budget Accommodation option a sleeping bag, liner and pillow are supplied for the nights that camping is for everyone.
